Important News About Y/BPS
Y/BPS, a partnership among the YMCA of Greater Boston, the Boston Public Schools and Mayor Thomas M. Menino, was established to help families answer the question, "Why should I consider the Boston Public Schools for my child's education?"
Effective June 1, the mission and critical aspects of the work of Y/BPS will be anchored in the Boston Public Schools’ Office of Welcome Services and Y/BPS will cease to operate as a stand-alone project.
What can families exploring BPS do?
Get helpful information about choosing a school for your child and navigating through the school years from BPS Welcome Services and in particular, Countdown to Kindergarten. Visit Countdown under our Quick Links to the right. This fall Countdown to Kindergarten will offer the unique Y/BPS curriculum of workshops for young families under the name: Why BPS?
Join Team BPS, the new, citywide corps of volunteer goodwill ambassadors for BPS, which launched May 8, 2010. Team BPS will incorporate the Y/BPS grassroots parent-to-parent outreach model, extending the model to parents across the city and including information about every school, including those in the new Circle of Promise.
Founded on Y/BPS’s network of parents, alumni, and educators, as well as networks established by BPS Welcome Services and Countdown to Kindergarten, Team BPS members will speak with parents about BPS, assist with School Preview Time, reach the public via social media, and more. For a quick summary and an online application, click on Team BPS under our Quick Links.
Members of Team BPS serve as good-will ambassadors for the Boston Public Schools. Volunteer opportunities include:
• Outreach to parents through emails, phone calls, or speaking at workshops;
• Staffing an event by handing out flyers, working at a registration desk for Parent University, or directing families to information at the Showcase of Schools; or
• Contributing to the public profile of BPS by writing a letter to the editor, being interviewed by a member of the press, or blogging about good news about BPS.
BPS Welcome Services will produce the Y/BPS e-newsletter, beginning with a June edition. Please subscribe for up-to-date information about BPS, registering for schools, and answers to parents’ questions.
